Mark Leidig - Martial Arts and Aikido Experience

1976 - Began Aikido training in Austin, TX, Spring, 1976, with Mark Roddy, under William Lee (Chief Instructor, Austin Ki Society). Affiliated with Western USA Ki Society and the late Rod Kobayashi Sensei . Trained at University of Texas (Austin), and Austin YMCA Aikido clubs.

1979-1981 - Invited by Austin Community College (ACC) to teach “Survey of Martial Arts” class in continuing education department. Changed course title to “Aikido” after 1 semester. Conducted ACC Aikido classes at Chris Cole Rehabilitation Center for the Blind, and created method for instruction to visually impaired people. Met Sensei Shizuo Imaizumi (Shihan) May, 1979, Malibu CA seminar hosted by Kobayashi Sensei.

1980 - Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) Aikido (Ki Society) at UT Austin by R. Kobayashi Sensei, December, 1980. Met and trained under Master Koichi Tohei May 1980, Boulder CO seminar.

1980 - 1990 - Visited New York City at least 1 month per year to attend regular classes with Imaizumi Sensei.

1981 - Appointed Chief Instructor of Austin Ki Society by Sensei Shizuo Imaizumi (Shihan) following departure of William Lee.

1981 - 1988 - Certified Austin Ki Society as authorized dojo. Instructed Ki Society Aikido at Austin YMCA 4 days a week. Affiliated with Sensei Koichi Kashiwaya and Midland Ki Federation 1981. Affiliated directly with Imaizumi Sensei ca. 1987.

1981 - 1984 - taught Aikido for Children at Austin YMCA.

1984-1986 - Invited to teach Aikido to Talented and Gifted (TAG) program at Texas School for the Blind (TSB). Created successful curriculum and training method for Junior High and High School visually impaired students. Also created and sustained Aikido club for regular students at TSB through Recreation Department.

1985-1986 - created curriculum and taught Aikido for the Learning Disabled (age 12-18) at Austin YMCA.

1984 - Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) Aikido (Ki Society) at Austin YMCA by Kashiwaya Sensei.

1987 - Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) Aikido (Ki Society) by recommendation of Imaizumi Sensei.

1988-1989 - Nominated for “Authorized Chief Instructor”(Ki Society) by Sensei Koretoshi Maruyama (Shihan). Attended National Chief Instructors Conference, Chicago, in place of Imaizumi Sensei, who had returned to Japan. Resigned from Ki Society and joined Imaizumi Sensei immediately upon his return from Japan and founding of Shin Budo Kai (SBK). Formed Austin Shin Budo Kai as Chief Instructor.

1989 - Offered and accepted Adjunct Faculty Status at Austin Community College. Ended affiliation with Austin YMCA. Began continuing career with adjunct faculty in Kinesiology Department, ACC.

1991 - Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt) Aikido (Shin Budo Kai) by recommendation of Imaizumi Sensei.

1993 - Hosted 5th Anniversary of Shin Budo Kai in Austin (seminar in Bastrop State Park).

1998 - Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) Aikido (Shin Budo Kai) by recommendation of Imaizumi Sensei, at 10th Anniversary of SBK seminar in Austin at ACC.

2000 - Received 6th Annual ACC Teaching Excellence Award.

2003 - Rokudan (6th Degree Black Belt) Aikido (Shin Budo Kai) by Imaizumi Sensei, at 15th Anniversary of SBK seminar in Waimea, HI.

Present - Chief Instructor, Austin Shin Budo Kai, 14th year of continuous (3 semesters/year) Aikido instruction at ACC , averaging 5 days per week, 2 classes per day.

Aikido Seminars and workshops - Hosted at least one seminar in Austin per year since 1981, most featuring Imaizumi Sensei. Attended several seminars per year since 1976 (from New York to California and Austin to Chicago, and points in between). Accepted invitations (since 1985) to conduct seminars in El Paso TX, Houston TX, Boulder CO, Albuquerque NM, New Orleans LA and Atlanta GA.

1977-1997 - Archery (target), with UT Austin archery club 1977-1985, independent from 1985 - 1990, 1990-1998 taught at ACC in Kinesiology department. Currently independent.

1977 - 1982 - Chinese Martial Art, external styles (Shaolin Chang Ch’uan, Northern Tong Long, Shuai Jiao) under John (Shiyuan) Wang of Austin (via Taiwan). Personal Shuai Jiao student of late Grandmaster Chiang Deng Shang during his 18 month residence with Sifu Wang in Austin.

1978 - 1984 - Tai Chi Ch’uan (Taijiquan) personal student of Wang Yu (Austin via Beijing), Mr. Henry Chan (NYC via Hong Kong), late Grandmaster Chang Deng Shang (Austin via China and Taiwan), Prof. Liu Shu Sheng (Austin via Tianjin University) and Prof. Jou Wen Biao (Austin via Beijing and Shanghai University).

1983 - Present - Instructor of Tai Chi Ch’uan (at recommendation of Profs. Liu and Jou); privately, and since 1989 as Kinesiology Adjunct Faculty at ACC (initiated Tai Chi as an ACC course offering).

1987-1989 - Fencing student of Maitre Gerard Poujardieu at Salle Poujardieu in Austin and San Antonio, TX.

1991- Present - designed curriculum and continuously taught ACC Martial Arts Weapons and Martial Arts Conditioning classes based on above and other experiences.
